On January 11, 2026, at the 2026 Winter International Association of Integrated Therapy (IAIT) Conference held in Daejeon, a scientific presentation explored the potential of equipment-based Pilates for the recovery of chronic low back pain.
The conference focused on linking measurable physiological indicators with reproducible programs that integrate elements such as breathing, rhythm, neural regulation, alignment, recovery, and natural healing. Clinical experts and researchers in yoga, Pilates, rehabilitation exercise, and integrated therapy attended to share research findings grounded in real-world practice.
The presentation took place during the “Clinical Recovery & Life-Stage Restoration” session, examining equipment-based Pilates as a feasible exercise intervention for chronic low back pain, supported by current literature. The presenter explained that chronic low back pain is not limited to musculoskeletal discomfort but often involves complex issues including neural dysregulation, disrupted movement patterns, and reduced daily functional capacity. Accordingly, the presentation emphasized whether equipment-based Pilates could provide neuromuscular re-education while minimizing the risk of overload.
Drawing on recent studies, the presentation analyzed outcomes related to pain intensity, spinal stability, functional movement recovery, daily activity performance, and quality of life. Findings suggested that equipment-based Pilates can be applied relatively safely to individuals with chronic low back pain and shows a positive trend in reducing pain and restoring function. In particular, the support and resistance properties of Pilates equipment were highlighted as contributing to controlled movement ranges and minimal overload, indicating its potential as a primary exercise intervention in rehabilitation and pain management.
The presenter, Yuran Kang, is actively involved in clinical guidance for Pilates and rehabilitation exercise and continues research on movement interventions focused on pain management and functional recovery. Drawing on extensive practical experience, Kang integrates academic research with field practice, aiming to expand Pilates as an evidence-based rehabilitation approach.
The International Association of Integrated Therapy (IAIT) is a Korean academic organization connecting therapy, yoga, Pilates, and rehabilitation exercise. It engages both practitioners and researchers, creating a structure in which clinical experience directly informs academic evidence. According to IAIT representatives, the association’s focus is on accumulating evidence that is repeatedly applicable in clinical settings, rather than separating field practice from scholarly research.
This presentation represents part of a broader research trend to expand Pilates as an evidence-based intervention for chronic pain management and functional recovery, with future directions including standardized clinical programs and further research for practical application.
