Why Your Body Feels “Strange” After Starting Pilates

Many people who begin Pilates say something unexpected.
Instead of feeling lighter, their body feels more sore, weaker than usual, and sometimes shaky during movements.

Because these sensations are unfamiliar, it is easy to think, “Maybe this exercise isn’t right for me.”
However, this phase is actually a sign that your body has started to learn properly.

1. Why You Feel More Sore After Exercising

This happens because muscles that have not been used much before are starting to activate.

In daily life, we tend to overuse certain areas while other muscles remain underused. Pilates works to correct this imbalance. As a result, fatigue and soreness often appear in areas that are not used to working.

This is not a sign that your body is getting worse.
It is closer to an adaptation response — your body is finally using muscles that were previously neglected.

2. Why You Suddenly Feel Weaker

Some people feel as if they have lost strength after starting Pilates. This does not mean their fitness has decreased. It happens because the body is letting go of its old “compensation strategies.”

Before, you may have been holding tension in the shoulders, over-tightening the lower back, or using neck muscles to stabilize yourself. As these unnecessary tension patterns decrease, you may temporarily feel weaker.

In reality, your body is learning a new balance.
The outer, forceful effort decreases while the deeper stabilizing muscles begin to prepare for proper use.

3. Why Your Body Shakes During Movements

Shaking during Pilates does not simply mean your core is weak. It often means your body is still developing awareness of its true center.

Previously, you may have relied on momentum or habitual movement patterns. Now, as you try to control muscles more consciously, movements feel unfamiliar and unstable.

This stage marks the shift from “automatic mode” to “learning mode.”
Shaking is not failure — it is part of the process of learning a new way to move.

Changes You Notice After This Phase

Once you move through this adaptation period, gradual changes begin to appear:

  • Movements feel more stable
  • Holding positions becomes easier
  • Unnecessary tension decreases
  • Your body feels more centered even in daily posture

The early discomfort is temporary, but after this stage, the body begins to move in a completely different way than before.

Why It’s Unfortunate to Quit at This Stage

Many beginners stop right at this point, thinking the exercise “doesn’t suit them.” But this is actually the stage where the most important changes are being prepared.

It is easy to return to your old, familiar state, but that state often contained accumulated imbalances. Passing through a slightly uncomfortable and unfamiliar period is what allows the body to build a more stable structure.

If your body feels unfamiliar after starting Pilates, it may not be a sign of failure, but a sign that adaptation has begun. Understanding that your body is learning a new movement system helps you move through this phase with much more ease.

At first, it may feel like your body is not responding well, but after this stage, movements become smoother and the way you use strength changes. Movements that once relied on force begin to be supported by your center. It may seem like a small shift, but this phase is a crucial turning point where the way your body functions truly starts to change.
