Effects of Equipment-Based Pilates Intervention on PFPS in Adults with Flat Feet to Be Presented at IAIT Academic Conference

The International Association of Integrative Therapy (IAIT) will host its academic conference on Sunday, January 11, 2026, at 1 PM, where the latest research and clinical applications in integrative therapy and movement intervention will be shared. The conference emphasizes not only theoretical discussions but also intervention methods and research findings validated in real clinical settings, drawing strong interest from professionals in integrative therapy, Pilates, and exercise rehabilitation.

Among the featured presentations is a study titled “The Effects of Equipment Pilates Intervention on Foot Arch Height and Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (PFPS) in Adults with Flat Feet.” PFPS is commonly recognized as a knee-related condition; however, clinical observations frequently indicate that collapse of the foot arch and changes in lower limb alignment play a significant role in the development and persistence of pain. Based on such clinical insights, this study shifts the focus from the knee joint itself to the lower extremity chain beginning at the foot.

In this research, adults with flat feet participated in a structured intervention program utilizing equipment-based Pilates. The study analyzed changes in foot arch support function and PFPS-related pain levels. Results demonstrated improved functional stability of the foot arch following the intervention, accompanied by a statistically significant reduction in PFPS pain. These findings suggest that equipment-based Pilates can serve not merely as a strengthening exercise, but as an integrated intervention tool capable of influencing overall lower limb alignment and movement patterns.

IAIT is an international academic association in which researchers and clinicians from physical therapy, Pilates, exercise rehabilitation, and musculoskeletal integrative therapy collaborate and exchange knowledge. The organization is recognized for its structure that connects clinical experience with research, promoting academic advancements that can be directly applied in practice.

The study will be presented by Director Juyoung Park, head of The Barun Pilates, who has over 10 years of clinical experience in Pilates and movement correction. She serves as an international Pilates examiner for MPA, Chair of the Musculoskeletal Neurotherapy Research Group at IAIT, and one of the IAIT 100 International Therapists. She is also the author of The Answer to Strength and Balance, Pilates, and has continuously worked to systemize clinical experience into theory and research.

This presentation represents a meaningful effort to validate clinical questions through research and return those findings to the field. It is expected to provide practical insights for therapists, Pilates instructors, and movement professionals interested in PFPS, flat feet, lower limb alignment, and equipment-based Pilates interventions.
